The mattress can often develop an odour. It usually happens when the mattress has not been cleaned for a long time. The dirt accumulating attracts germs and there might be mildew growth which leads to a very unpleasant smell. But, with several cleaning and odour removal solutions, you can easily treat your mattress at home. These products will not only make your mattress free from odour but also clean it completely
Before starting with any chemical agents or solutions, you should use a vacuum cleaner. Remove all pillowcases, sheets, and blankets from the bed. Take a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment and thoroughly clean the mattress. This is important because often there is dirt between the fibres of the fabric and that gives rise to odours.
Flip the mattress and clean the other side as well. After you have vacuumed the mattress you can apply various different chemicals or other substances to get rid of the odours.
These Agents are Listed Below:
- Distilled White Vinegar – Take a spray bottle and mix equal parts distilled White vinegar with water. Spray the solution all over the mattress. Do not soak the mattress but just let it become damp. The mattress will take a day to dry completely. Change sides and repeat again. Distilled white vinegar is a great cleaning agent and it gets rid of all lingering odours.
- Baking Soda – Baking soda is another readily available substance that you can use to remove odours from your mattress. Sprinkle baking soda all over the mattress and let it sit for a day. The baking soda will absorb all moisture and prevent the odour from developing. Allow enough sunlight into the room. Sunlight kills bacteria which might have been giving rise to the odour.
- Corn-Starch – Corn-starch can remove even the strongest odours from a mattress. It is also good for stain removal. Urine stains along with the odour can be easily removed with corn-starch. Sprinkle corn-starch over the affected area and use a clean, damp cloth to blot and wipe with. After a while, clean the area thoroughly but gently with a paper towel. You can also use a mixture of corn-starch and baking soda.
Once you have cleaned and treated the mattress with some odour removal agent, you should place it in a waterproof mattress encasement. This will protect the mattress from excess moisture and spills that can cause odour.
A waterproof mattress encasement prevents spilled solutions or other substances from seeping into the mattress and accumulating in between the fibres. Now, often treating the mattress is not enough to get rid of all odours. You should wash the bedding thoroughly with hot water as well. However, before using any mattress cleaning Sydney or odour removal techniques, for the mattress or the bedding, check their labels.
The labels will provide information about what materials can be used on them. To keep the mattress fresh for a long time you should use a mattress protector as well. It deodorizes the mattress and lets it stay odour free.
